Collaboration to advance AI and imaging technologies for early detection, precision diagnosis, and improved management of liver diseases in India
BENGALURU, July 23, 2025 – Apollo Hospitals and Siemens Healthineers have announced a strategic research collaboration aimed at revolutionizing liver healthcare through cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced imaging technologies. The partnership seeks to enhance patient care pathways for liver disease management—spanning early detection, risk stratification, treatment monitoring, and improved clinical outcomes.
The collaboration brings together Apollo’s clinical excellence and Siemens Healthineers’ technological expertise to develop innovative solutions addressing the rising burden of liver diseases in India. The initiative focuses on early diagnosis, accurate detection, and precise monitoring to improve patient outcomes.
According to Government of India guidelines, Metabolic
Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD)—formerly referred to as NAFLD—is emerging as a major public health challenge. Its prevalence in India ranges from 9% to 32%, with higher incidence among overweight, obese, and diabetic individuals. NFHS-4 (2015–2016) data shows 18–20% of adults are overweight or obese, while 3–8% have abnormal blood sugar levels. MASLD significantly raises cardiovascular risks, with heart disease remaining the leading cause of mortality.
Transforming Liver Disease Diagnosis with AI
Dr. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals, emphasized the transformative potential of this partnership:
> “The future of healthcare lies at the intersection of clinical excellence and cutting-edge technology anchored in patient centricity. Our collaboration with Siemens Healthineers marks a significant step toward redefining non-invasive diagnostics for liver disease. With AI-driven disease progression models, we can detect fibrosis earlier, enable timely interventions, facilitate cost-effective screening, and improve population health strategies. This initiative also aligns with Apollo’s vision of embedding intelligent systems across the clinical spectrum for more accurate, proactive patient care.”
Hariharan Subramanian, Managing Director, Siemens Healthcare Private Limited, added:
> “Liver disease is a growing health concern in India, making early diagnosis and prevention crucial. Through advanced diagnostic tools, lifestyle awareness, and timely interventions, we can significantly improve quality of life. Our joint effort will address unmet needs in liver disease diagnosis and management, helping clinicians provide more precise and effective care.”
A Strategic Milestone
The collaboration follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024, leading to a Master Research Agreement (MRA) formalized in March 2025. The MRA establishes a foundation for joint research in diagnostic and interventional ultrasound imaging. On July 23, 2025, the signing ceremony for the MRA Addendum was held in Hyderabad, marking another key milestone in this partnership.
