With a fivefold growth in charging stations since 2022, India’s metros are shaping the future of urban EV mobility—and VinFast is stepping in with dealerships, a Tamil Nadu plant, and nationwide partnerships.
Gurugram, Haryana, August 27, 2025: India’s largest cities are rapidly becoming hubs for electric vehicle (EV) adoption, creating fertile ground for global automakers like Vietnamese EV manufacturer VinFast to scale operations. The country’s public charging network has grown nearly fivefold since 2022, reaching 26,367 public charging points by April 2025, with much of that expansion concentrated in metro hubs.
While four-wheeler EV adoption remains in the single digits, supportive policies, shorter daily commutes, and a younger consumer base are aligning to accelerate demand. Cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune are leading the charge, driven by mandates like Delhi’s rule requiring EV-ready parking in new residential buildings.
Policy Push Fuels Growth
India’s national and state governments are actively encouraging EV adoption. Proposals to exempt EVs from the 15-year “End of Life” rule could boost resale values, while Delhi is considering waiving road tax and registration fees again. Maharashtra offers subsidies of up to ₹2 lakh for EV buyers, and Tamil Nadu provides capital incentives to manufacturers. Together, these measures aim to make EV ownership more accessible and attractive.
VinFast Expands Urban Presence
Capitalizing on this momentum, VinFast has signed agreements with multiple dealer partners to establish 32 dealerships across 27 cities, with a total of 35 expected by the end of 2025. The network will cover Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune—India’s most dynamic EV markets.
To strengthen customer confidence, VinFast is building a 3S ecosystem (Sales, Service, Spares) alongside partnerships with RoadGrid, myTVS, and Global Assure to develop a nationwide charging and service network. This includes AI-driven diagnostics, battery recycling collaborations, and real-time charging accessibility through digital platforms.
Tamil Nadu Plant Kickstarts Local Manufacturing
Earlier this month, VinFast inaugurated its first overseas EV assembly plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, with an initial USD 500 million investment. The 400-acre facility currently assembles vehicles from imported components but will gradually scale into full manufacturing, including a supplier park.
The plant’s initial capacity of 50,000 vehicles annually can expand up to 150,000, with the first models—the VF 6 and VF 7 premium SUVs—already in the pipeline. The project is expected to generate 3,000–3,500 jobs locally, while also serving as an export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Orders are already being placed from Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Mauritius.
Urban EV Readiness Leads the Way
With 37% of India’s population living in cities—and that number set to rise—the concentration of infrastructure, incomes, and mobility needs is making metros the epicenter of EV adoption. Automakers willing to invest early, build locally, and align with government policies stand to benefit most.
