Directed by National Award-winner Abhishek Shah, Umbarro (meaning “threshold”) is a delightful yet heart touching Gujarati comedy-drama that follows the journey of seven women from different walks of life as they embark on their first international trip to London. What begins as a sightseeing vacation quickly evolves into a life-changing adventure as these women, each navigating their own insecurities, limitations, and social expectations, find the courage to cross their inner thresholds and rediscover joy on their own terms.
Umbarro paints a vibrant canvas of culture, connection, and growth, brought to life by a powerhouse ensemble including Vandana Pathak, Kaajal Oza Vaidya, Sucheeta Trivedi, Deeksha Joshi, Tarjanee Bhadla, Tejal Panchasara, Vineeta Joshee, alongside Aarjav Trivedi and Sanjay Galsar. Set against the iconic cityscape of London, the film uses the unfamiliar setting not just as a backdrop, but as a metaphor for breaking free from the known and stepping into possibility.
Director Abhishek Shah shares, “After directing and producing ‘Hellaro’, a film that spoke of self-expression and gave voice to the unheard — I went on, as a producer, to create ‘Kamthaan’, a story that explored the conflict between the powerful and the powerless. Later, as a director, ‘Umbarro’ was driven by a desire to tell a light-hearted story that carries a deeper message — about crossing boundaries. I wanted to explore that threshold we all face in life, the moment that calls for a decision, big or small, to move forward. Each film, in its own way, is a conversation with silence, with struggle, and ultimately, the power of finding one’s voice. All in the pursuit of meaningful entertainment.”
For Vandana Pathak, who plays the emotionally rich character of Seemaben, the experience was equally personal. “Seema Patel reminded me of so many women around us—mothers, aunts, neighbours—who’ve spent their whole lives being caregivers, never once thinking of their own desires. Umbarro gave me the chance to honour those women. This isn’t just a film; it’s a reflection, a reminder that it’s never too late to choose yourself,” she says.
Deeksha Joshi, who plays the introspective and layered Anvesha, adds, “Working on Umbarro was like therapy. My Journaling habit that had stopped, began post Umbarro. Anvesha is going through emotional turmoil—She hasn’t had the courage to face her biggest fear. She’s subconsciously been avoiding it and masking it with her chirpiness. It’s rare to find scripts that allow a woman’s journey to unfold gently, just with honesty. I believe this film will give many women the courage to take that first step towards something new—whether it’s travel, healing, or self-acceptance.”
