IICT Launches in Mumbai with Cutting-Edge Labs; National Rollout and Film City Campus Next.

Mumbai: In a groundbreaking move set to reshape India’s creative and digital media ecosystem, the Hon’ble Minister of Information and Broadcasting announced the launch of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) at the Waves Summit 2025. Conceived as a premier national institution for the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) sector, IICT aspires to stand alongside the IITs and IIMs in stature and impact.

The initiative, driven by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in collaboration with industry bodies FICCI and CII, represents a powerful public-private partnership aimed at accelerating India’s creative economy. With an initial funding of ₹400 crore approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and land support from the Government of Maharashtra, IICT has already commenced operations.

Major global technology and media players—including NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Star India, and Adobe—have partnered with the institute, reflecting strong industry confidence in IICT’s ambitious vision to position India as a global leader in creative technology. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted IICT’s potential to drive international growth for the entertainment sector while reinforcing Mumbai’s role as a global creative hub.

Phase one of IICT is now functional at the NFDC Building on Pedder Road, Mumbai, equipped with advanced infrastructure such as Gaming and Animation Labs, Edit and Sound Suites, Virtual Production Setups, Immersive Studios, a Preview Theatre, and smart classrooms. Phase two will see the development of a state-of-the-art 10-acre campus at Film City, Goregaon, further expanding the institute’s training, innovation, and production capabilities.

Looking forward, the government aims to roll out regional IICT centers across the country to ensure equitable access to cutting-edge education and facilities in creative technology. With a strong emphasis on education, incubation, research & development, and policy leadership, IICT is poised to unlock new avenues for young talent and entrepreneurs. The initiative marks a significant step in enhancing India’s soft power and boosting creative exports, heralding a new era for the nation’s digital and cultural economy.
