From Apex Legends to digital chess, Indian esports organizations expand their global footprint on International Chess Day

New Delhi, July 2025: Indian esports powerhouse S8UL has been selected among the 40 elite global teams in the Esports World Cup Foundation’s (EWCF) Club Partner Program, securing its place to compete with the world’s best in Apex Legends and EAFC, while also vying for qualification in Tekken 8 through the Last Chance Qualifier. The move marks a significant step in broadening India’s presence across multiple esports titles.
The growth of chess within the esports ecosystem has been equally remarkable. Grandmaster Nihal Sarin, who represents S8UL, shared his thoughts on the transformation:
“It’s incredible to watch chess evolve from a quiet, traditional sport into a bold, global movement. Being part of S8UL has introduced me to the world of esports and content creation, opening new ways to connect with people. Today, chess isn’t just about strategy—it’s about storytelling, culture, and community. I’m proud to be part of this exciting shift as the game enters a new era.”
Leading this chess esports revolution in India is NODWIN Gaming, a pioneer in South Asia’s gaming and esports landscape. The company recently partnered with Chess.com and ChessBase India to shape the future of chess esports in the country. This collaboration has already seen phenomenal success, particularly with the exclusive streaming of the World Chess Championship, where India’s Gukesh Dommaraju defeated Ding Liren to become the World Chess Champion. The event garnered over 24 million views and peaked at 200,000 concurrent viewers.
Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and Managing Director of NODWIN Gaming, emphasized the digital transformation of chess:
“The rise of online chess shows how even the most traditional games can reinvent themselves in a digital-first world. Chess has always stood for intellect and discipline, but with streaming, new formats, and structured esports competitions, it’s now more accessible and entertaining than ever, especially for younger audiences.”
Over the years, NODWIN Gaming has been instrumental in mainstreaming chess, introducing innovative initiatives like the Chess Super League 2021, which brought together top international Grandmasters, Indian stars, International Masters, and rising juniors for a competitive and engaging tournament. Chess has also featured prominently at DreamHack Hyderabad, India’s largest gaming festival, solidifying its place within the country’s vibrant esports culture.
Rathee added:
> “At NODWIN, we’ve always focused on youth entertainment across gaming, esports, and digital culture. Chess fits perfectly into that vision. We’re excited to keep reimagining how the game is experienced and help it grow as a meaningful part of the broader digital entertainment ecosystem.”
As the world marks International Chess Day, India’s chess evolution highlights how the ancient game continues to inspire new generations. With digital platforms, esports partnerships, and vibrant online communities, chess has transcended its traditional boundaries, emerging as both a competitive sport and a dynamic storytelling medium in the digital age.
