Vietnamese automaker sets new benchmark for manufacturing speed with state-of-the-art facility capable of producing 50,000 EVs annually, scalable to 150,000.
Gurgaon, Haryana, August 14, 2025: Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has achieved a major milestone in India’s automotive landscape, completing its advanced EV assembly plant in Tamil Nadu in just 17 months — the fastest manufacturing scale-up by any foreign carmaker in the country.
From breaking ground in February 2024 to inaugurating the plant this August, the company outpaced the industry norm of 24–36 months for large auto facilities. The 400-acre site in Thoothukudi boasts robotic body shops, automated paint lines, and a fully trained workforce adhering to international quality standards.
VinFast selected Tamil Nadu over 15 other potential sites across six states, citing superior port access, infrastructure, skilled labour availability, and proactive government support. “It reaffirms Tamil Nadu’s progressive industrial policies and will substantially contribute to local economic advancement, job creation, and technical skill development,” said Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa.
The facility is designed for an initial capacity of 50,000 EVs annually, with scalability to 150,000 units. An adjoining industrial zone will foster local suppliers, bolstering a regional EV manufacturing ecosystem.
Inside, 17 ABB robots assist skilled welders in the Body Shop, while the Paint Shop uses eight Durr robots for precision finishes. VinFast partnered with Atlas Copco, Arrow, and Siemens to integrate Industry 4.0-grade automation and quality systems, including a Manufacturing Execution System, smart torque tools, and 3D measurement technologies.
Recruitment began early, with over 200 workers inducted and trained through the Naan Mudhalvan program before assembly lines were completed. At full capacity, the plant will directly employ 3,000–3,500 workers, driving both economic and technical growth in the region.
