Cataract Awareness Cyclothon in Bengaluru urges early diagnosis and timely treatment to combat preventable blindness
Bengaluru, June 26, 2025:In a major step to combat preventable blindness, Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, in collaboration with Sun Pharma, organised a Cataract Awareness Cyclothon today in Jayanagar, Bengaluru. The initiative focused on educating the public about cataracts — a condition that accounts for over 66% of blindness cases in India despite being preventable and treatable.
The cyclothon drew participation from more than 75 cyclists, including healthcare professionals and eye donors from Shraddha Eye Care, the charitable arm of Nethradhama. The event was flagged off by Mr. R. K. Gupta, Trustee of Koshika Foundation, and Professor Dr. Sri Ganesh, Chairman and Managing Director of Nethradhama. Cyclists covered prominent routes across Jayanagar to spread awareness about early detection and the importance of regular eye check-ups.

According to the National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in India, particularly among the elderly and in underserved rural populations. A key challenge remains late diagnosis, which often results in irreversible vision loss.
> “While cataracts are treatable, many suffer unnecessarily due to delayed diagnosis and lack of awareness,” said Professor Dr. Sri Ganesh. “Through initiatives like the Cyclothon, we aim to take this critical message directly to the community, encouraging early action and regular screening.”
Mr. R. K. Gupta added,
> “At Koshika Foundation, we believe restoring sight restores dignity. We’ve funded over 14,000 cataract surgeries through Shraddha Eye Care, and events like this drive home the importance of collaboration in preventing avoidable blindness.”
Nethradhama also launched a series of parallel initiatives including community outreach programs, distribution of educational materials, and social media campaigns to reach a broader audience. The hospital is urging families—especially those with elderly members—to prioritise regular eye exams and be vigilant about early signs of cataracts, such as blurred vision or difficulty seeing at night.
