Mattia Antonio Cianca DipWSET said, India’s wine industry faces several challenges, particularly from a sommelier’s perspective. One of the most pressing issues is the limited availability of diverse, high-quality wines. The market is dominated by mainstream wines from established countries like Spain, France, Italy and Australia. Additionally, regional wines in India are often undervalued and perceived as low quality, leading to a lack of appreciation from consumers and limited visibility on global platforms.
SAI is working to address these challenges by fostering a culture that champions local wineries. Through masterclasses, competitions, and educational initiatives, SAI integrates high-quality Indian wines into its programs, offering them a platform to gain recognition and appreciation. SAI also encourages these wineries to join as member companies, providing them with greater visibility and opportunities to connect with international markets. Sommeliers play a vital role in this transformation by advocating for Indian wines and bringing them to a global audience. By leveraging their expertise and storytelling skills, they can highlight the uniqueness of Indian wines and showcase their potential as a producer of good quality wines. Through these efforts, SAI aims to redefine perceptions and elevate the standing of both Indian and international wines in the wine industry.

By participating in international platforms, Indian sommeliers will gain exposure to the world’s best professionals, enriching their own knowledge. This exposure allows them to bring back valuable lessons, special values, and unique experiences, which they can share with their peers and communicate to their guests in the workplace.
One of the keys to growing the wine industry in India lies in increasing knowledge among sommeliers and contributing to efficient, approachable communication with passionate wine lovers. As more enthusiasts learn the basics of wine, the demand for high-quality local and international products will naturally increase. This growth in awareness and demand will not only improve the overall industry but also enhance the reputation of sommeliers in India. They will gain greater respect and recognition, including from their employers, as key contributors to the dining and beverage experience.
SAI is keen to explore innovative trends such as virtual wine education and emphasizing sustainability in wine appreciation. These efforts align with our broader mission to educate sommeliers and consumers alike while creating a robust platform for growth and excellence in India’s wine and beverage culture.
