Ministry cites national security concerns; warns of strict action for violations.
Mumbai: Following the terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) on Saturday issued a stern advisory prohibiting live coverage of defence operations and movement of security forces.
The advisory, addressed to television channels, digital platforms, and social media users, stressed the need to protect sensitive operational details that could compromise national security.
“In the interest of national security, all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users are advised to exercise utmost responsibility and adhere strictly to operational guidelines,” the ministry said in a two-page directive.
Citing the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam attack, and earlier incidents like Pulwama (2019), Uri (2016), and Lethpora (2017), the ministry warned that unregulated coverage in the past had jeopardized operations and endangered lives.
The MIB invoked Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks Rules, prohibiting content that could threaten national security. Amendments to the Rules in 2021 and 2025 have further tightened compliance obligations for broadcasters and digital creators.
Media houses were reminded that violations would invite strict action under the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021. The advisory also directed digital-first creators to fully comply.
Highlighting a pattern of foreign media outlets exploiting sensitive coverage to undermine India’s national interests, the ministry urged that any defence-related content must be cleared by competent authorities before publication.
The communication ended with a call for all stakeholders to maintain vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility in their coverage, upholding the highest standards in service to the nation.
