Mumbai: In a society where women continue to prove their strength and capabilities in every field, it is disheartening that outdated beauty standards still dictate their worth. The bias against skin colour remains a harsh reality, often overshadowing a person’s true potential. Sparking a much-needed conversation about self-worth and societal perceptions, Shemaroo Umang and Story Square Productions present Jamuniya, a thought-provoking show that highlights the struggles of those judged for their appearance. Premiering on March 3, 2025, at 8:00 PM, the show will air Monday to Saturday, bringing an inspiring story to audiences across India.
Starring Aleya Ghosh in the titular role alongside Rajat Verma, Jamuniya also features Bhojpuri superstar Rani Chatterjee and veteran actress Meena Mir in pivotal roles. Set in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, the show follows the journey of a young girl, Jamuniya, who faces discrimination because of her dark complexion. However, just like the Jamun fruit—dark on the outside but filled with richness—Jamuniya’s true worth lies beyond appearances. She may not be the first to catch someone’s eye, but her resilience, intelligence, and strength make her truly unforgettable. Through her story, the show sheds light on the pressures of conventional beauty norms and their impact on individual identity and acceptance.
Speaking about the show, Sandeep Gupta, COO – Broadcasting Business, Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd., shared, “Stories that not only entertain but also strike an emotional chord with the audience have the potential to drive meaningful change. With Jamuniya, we want to address a crucial societal issue— colour-based discrimination, and the struggles many face due to societal conditioning around beauty. Television has the power to shape perspectives and spark conversations, and we hope this show challenges outdated mindsets while inspiring confidence in those who have faced similar biases. Jamuniya is not just a show; it is a movement that urges society to look beyond appearances and recognize true worth.”
Adding to this, Vedraj, the concept creator of the show expressed, “As storytellers, our responsibility goes beyond creating engaging content—we have the power to question deep-rooted prejudices and bring about change. Jamuniya is a reflection of the biases that still exist around us. Through this story, we aim to encourage conversations about self-worth, acceptance, and breaking free from outdated beauty standards. We hope Jamuniya resonates with audiences and leaves a lasting impact.”
With a compelling narrative, strong performances and a socially relevant message, Jamuniya is all set to redefine perspectives and challenge the way society views beauty.
“Rang ke chashme se dekhti hai duniya, kya duniya ka nazariya badal paayegi, Jamuniya?”
