Dishi Somani founder of Dishis Designer Jewelry in conversation with MadeInMedia.in’s Kalpana Ravi this Woman’s Day on how organisations need to be more inclusive……..
What are some of the biggest challenges women still face in leadership roles, and how can organizations foster real change?
Even in this modern society women still face major obstacles in breaking the glass ceiling to leadership positions. Some of those obstacles include issues of female bias, a limited opportunity for promotions, and the glass ceiling as well. Women are judged harshly and usually have limited opportunities for promotion to senior management. This makes it much harder for them to get respect from their male counterparts. The corporation can also build a culture of inclusivity and equal opportunities for various styles of leadership by vocalizing its commitment to gender-balanced hiring, providing mentored supervision, and offering flexible working hours. Equal pay-for-equal-work deals should be used by corporations with mechanisms in place so the work can accommodate different contextual requirements.
With evolving work environments, how can company’s better support women in achieving a healthy work-life balance?
As workplace arrangements continue to change, organizations may help women gain proper work-life balance by providing facilities like a gym and healthy snacks to minimize stress and boost energy. Organizations need to ensure that there are limits to workload and boundaries should be respected to empower women further; this can be done by establishing a culture that recognizes individual time and limits overtime. Parental leave policies, on-site child care, or childcare subsidies can also alleviate some of the great burdens of working mothers, allowing them to combine familial aspects and work with great success.
How can media and advertising play a stronger role in shaping positive and empowering narratives for women?
The media play a crucial role in establishing an image of women’s empowerment by influencing societal attitudes about roles and equality. Representing competent women leaders, campaigns supporting women’s rights, and advertising against gender discrimination help to construct an alternative. Unfortunately, mainstream media have too often presented women in stereotypically limited roles, glorifying these over any intellectual or career successes. While digital media has democratized content, it also poses potential risks such as online abuse of women and the continuation of misogynistic materials. As a result, the media are both expressively empowered and stereotypical.
As more women enter STEM and digital fields, what initiatives can help bridge the gender gap in these industries?
Campaigns must focus on education, mentorship, and workplace inclusion to mitigate problems of expanding gender disparity in STEM and digital fields. STEM should be taught at a very young age so that girls see the professions of science and technology as open and viable. Companies can have women-led mentorship programs, place scholarships, and allow networking for prospective female professionals. Furthermore, organizations should increasingly consider new solutions to address gaps in promotion and hiring to ensure equal chances for women. Safe, inclusive, and caring employment environments are an effective way to bring about significant change in the sector.
What steps can individuals and businesses take to empower women towards greater financial literacy and independence?
Financial literacy should receive ample encouragement for women to make informed choices, protect their interests, and accumulate wealth. Teaching women how to budget, save, and invest should also be geared up. Additionally, empowering livelihood opportunities through skill development, vocational training, and microfinance will increase economic independence. ‘
Empowering entrepreneurship through mentoring and access to capital can enable women to develop successful businesses. Moreover, access to low-cost financial services such as banking and insurance needs to be the foundation of financial inclusion. There is a need to develop a gender-empowered culture in financial institutions, as well as tailor specific financial solutions for women. It is also critical to educate women to set financial objectives, prepare ahead, and maintain emotional well-being while navigating their financial world.
